Respect: Unique74 remembers Edwin Birdsong..

My OG..Mentor..Master Teacher..Friend. It’s been difficult for me to grasp and put my thoughts together..still in disbelief.. All I can think of are his teachings, iconic back stories (Paradise Garage and his appearance on the original Chicago broadcast taping of Soul Train stand out in particular), epic moments and more than plenty laughs. He took music seriously..it was not a game. Classically trained and followed that strict old school regimen to a science. I recall one time we where in rehearsal and Uncle Bird stepped out for a minute (my brother @derekmckeith who graciously introduced us was witness to this particular event). I’ve never been shy on picking up drumsticks, we were waiting on the drummer who was running behind or had to reschedule (shout out Clinton) so I start jamming with the band. We get a groove for about a good 20 minutes. In my mind, I was Buddy Miles in that moment. Everyone seem to show approval of my playing. Bird walks back into the studio and im playing my best stuff man..I mean some stomp down grooves. Bird looked at me and said “Ski, can you turn on the drum machine?”. My ego was crushed for a millisecond. I got over it..lmfao I understood and respect the code of conduct when it comes to this journey of music. It’s a privilege..not a right. Please take a moment and check out his writing, production credits and catalog..you will be pleasantly surprised. His music will be with us forever and a day. Sending infinite love, gratitude and condolences to his family and friends. Rest in Love Mr Edwin Birdsong..standing ovation.. 👑
